Kerala Parippu/Daal Curry (Onam/Vishu Sadya Parippu Curry)

Kerala Parippu/Daal Curry (Onam/Vishu Sadya Parippu Curry) is a tasty and authentic recipe from South India. It is a combination of cooked moong daal/lentil/ cheru payar, coconut and some spices ground paste. The ney/ghee or coconut oil seasoning is the highlight or tasty part of this recipe. This yummy mild spicy curry has an important role in Kerala sadya. Sadya means ‘banquet’ (in Malayalam) is a delicious vegetarian meal with more than 23-26 dishes on a banana leaf.The Sadhya (feast) is a major part of all Kerala festivals like onam, vishu, traditional Hindu marriages etc. For sadhya, the main dish is boiled rice (Kuthari Choru) served along with side dishes collectively called Kootan which includes watery curries (Chaaru Curry) like parippu, sambar, rasam, pulisseri and others side curries (thodu Curry) like kaalan, avial, thoran, olan, pachadi, kichadi, koottukari, erissery, mango pickle, pulinji or inji curry, naranga achaar (lime pickle), as well as pappadam, plantain upperi/chips, sharkara peratti, banana, plain curd and buttermilk and the traditional desserts known as payasam. This parippu curry is the first watery side dish to serve for Sadya and keralites enjoy this yummy parippu curry with rice, pappad and ghee.

Ingredients For Kerala Parippu/Daal Curry (Onam/Vishu Sadya Parippu Curry)

  • Cheru Payar Parippu/Moong dal
  • 1 cup(Split and skinless)
  • Grated Coconut
  • 1/2 to 3/4 Cup
  • Green Chilly
  • 2 or 3(Diced)
  • Shallots/Small Onion
  • 2(Diced)
  • Turmeric Powder
  • ½ Teaspoon
  • Roasted Cumin/Jeera Powder
  • 3/4 Teaspoon

  • Coconut Oil/ Ghee
  • 1 Tablespoon
  • Mustard/Kaduku
  • ½ Teaspoon
  • Shallots/Small Onion
  • 3 (Chopped)
  • Garlic
  • 2 Cloves(Chopped)
  • Dry Chilly
  • 3 (Cut into small)
  • Curry Leaves
  • 1 sprig
  • Chilly Powder
  • ¼ Teaspoon


How to make Kerala Parippu/Daal Curry (Onam/Vishu Sadya Parippu Curry) with Step by Step Method Pictures.

1.Roast moong daal/ parippu in a medium heat. When it is light golden color, turn off the heat and leave it to cool.

2. When it is cool, wash and clean. Add required water. Pressure cook until the cooker whistles twice. Turn off the heat and leave it cool for pressure to release.

3. Meanwhile, place coconut, green chilly, small onions, turmeric powder, and cumin seed powder in a grinder (small jar) or food processor.

4. Add little water, grind and make a smooth paste. Keep aside.

5. The Cooked daal should look like this. Use a big spoon, mash it gently.

6. Heat daal again with ground coconut paste, water (required) and salt to taste.

7.Mix and heat well, taste it and add salt if required. Do not boil Parippu curry, a good heating is enough. Turn off the heat and keep aside.

8. In a frying pan, heat oil/ghee. Pop Mustard seeds. Add chopped onions, garlic, dry chilly and curry leaves. Fry until golden and crispy. Reduce the flame and add ¼ teaspoon chilly powder, mix well.Turn off the heat immediately (otherwise chilly powder will burn).

9. Pour it over to Parippu Curry.

10. Mix well.

11. Serve hot or warm with boiled rice, ghee and pappad. Enjoy!
